Students will be working on panels and paper to explore applying layers, using good compositional design, unique techniques and the use of different tools.. There will be many demonstrations and personal help. Students will also learn color harmony and abstract design. The workshop is geared to beginner and intermediate artists who want to learn the techniques of painting with cold wax.
MATERIALS NEEDED
1 pint of cold wax (Gamblin or Dorlands)
Oil paint – Gamblin 1980 and Utrecht are a good choice. You should have a green, red, blue, yellow, orange and purple. Plus 2 tubes of white and 1 tube of black. Any other colors you enjoy would be fine. We will be using lots of white. You can also use water-soluble oil paint. You cannot use both, one or the other.
A bowl scraper – Zole + Chloe Multi=Purpose Silicone Scraper from Amazon is a great choice and can be purchased from Amazon. I will also have them to purchase at cost.
Gamblin’s Gamsol odorless solvent – put in a spray bottle. Solvent must be odorless.
Palette knife
Supports – Arches OIL paper / Multimedia Artboard / cradled wooden panels / canvas /panels made for oil. All panels and cradled panels need to be gesso’d prior to class! If using cradled panel, also tape the sides. If you have a question about this, I can send you a short video on how it’s done. You will need at least 5 to 6 supports for the 3 days. We will be working on several at a time. Supports should be no larger than 16 x 16. You can work on paper or panels, you don’t need both.
